    President Akufo-Addo – ‘I am not responsible for jailing protesters; their actions led to arrests at events at the heart of democracy’

    President Akufo-Addo has defended the latest arrest and detention of 53 democratic heart protesters who started three days of demonstrations towards unlawful mining, generally referred to as Garamsi. The protesters have been remanded in jail and police custody for 2 weeks and are scheduled to look in courtroom once more on October 8.

    In an interview with France 24, the president distanced himself from the manager department of presidency and clarified that it was the actions of the protesters and never their protests that had prompted the scenario. Akufo-Addo emphasised that in Ghana, it’s the courts, not the president, who determine who’s imprisoned.

    “I’m not accountable for jailing individuals in Ghana. The courts are unbiased establishments of the Fourth Republic. When individuals misbehave, they face the courts, not the administration. It’s their habits, not the protests, that causes issues for the police and courts Per se,” the president defined.

    The president, who has led protests throughout his political profession, affirmed his help for residents’ proper to protest. He made it clear that his authorities wouldn’t suppress this proper in any manner.

    “How can a president whose political journey has been affected by protests have an issue with individuals protesting? I do not know. Ghana has performed nothing to cease anybody from expressing their views,” Akufo-Addo added.
